If you are hiring a Shopify developer but aren’t too technical yourself, you may be asking yourself, what should a GOOD Shopify developer know?
If you are hiring a Shopify developer but aren’t too technical yourself, you may be asking yourself, what should a GOOD Shopify developer know? Here are 5 things every Shopify expert should know how to do…
Number 1: Using Github & Theme Kit
You may not even be using GitHub right now in your company. But that’s a big mistake because it’s the only way to ensure the stability of the themes and have as a backup in case something breaks or the client decides to go in and make a change.
Number 2: Sections
Themes use sections to create your ideal layout. Most sections are made up of blocks that serve a specific function, such as headers, text, single images, a collage of images, or links. If a developer doesn’t know how to link new sections that they build into the customizer frontend, then you or your client will not be able to edit that content at all.
Number 3: Metafields
Metafields give the power to customize and create variety on pages such as the product area. Instead of having the same blocks of content to talk about the same thing on each product page, we can instead have unique content for each product without having to create many product templates. This is done using an app, but should be very well known to a developer.
Number 4: Shopify Limitations
While Shopify is a great platform, it has limitations such as editing the checkout, or modifying the backend where you enter product information. Without this knowledge, they will now be able to consult you on how to thingsthat a client may ask for on a store.
Number 5: Shopify 2.0
In July 2021, Shopify came out with new features on themes called Shopify 2.0. These include better developer tools such as the metafields options and easy connection to Github, as well as easy sections on all theme pages. Any real Shopify developer would be very aware of these Shopify improvements and know how to use them.
Number 6: Common Shopify Apps
App configuration can be learned, and no developer is expected to know all the apps because there are thousands on the app store. However knowing the most important ones such as Recharge Subscriptions, Bold Upsell app, or Wholesale apps show that the developer has experience with Shopify and should know what they are doing
